## Custom ductwork questions

### What does your sheet metal shop make?

Lancaster Group's sheet metal fabrication shop builds custom ductwork and fittings to the measurements of your project. That includes straight duct runs, transitions, offsets, plenums, curb adapters for rooftop units and complete duct systems. Because we design, build and install it ourselves, parts fit your space the first time instead of being forced to fit.

### What materials is custom ductwork made from?

We fabricate most custom ductwork from galvanized steel, along with other industry-standard materials where a project calls for them. Galvanized steel is durable, resists corrosion and keeps its shape, which makes it a reliable choice for supply and return ducts. Ducts in unheated spaces can also be insulated to reduce heat loss and condensation.

### When do I need custom ductwork instead of standard parts?

Custom ductwork makes sense when standard sizes don't fit your space or your airflow needs. Common examples include tight joist spaces, older homes with unusual framing, finished basements, additions, relocated rooms, and connecting new equipment to existing ducts. We measure on site and build the pieces to suit, rather than piecing together off-the-shelf fittings.

### How long does custom ductwork take?

Timing depends on the size and complexity of the job, site measurements, and how the work fits into the rest of your project, such as framing and drywall schedules. Because we fabricate in our own shop, we don't wait on an outside supplier for custom pieces. We'll give you a realistic timeline once we've seen the space.

### Can you add ductwork for a home addition or renovation?

Yes. We design and fabricate ductwork for additions, renovations and relocated rooms, and connect it to your existing system. We also check whether your current furnace or air conditioner can handle the extra space, so the new rooms are as comfortable as the rest of the house. It's best to involve us before walls and ceilings are closed in.

### Can you modify the existing ductwork in an older home?

Yes. Older homes often have ductwork that was undersized, altered over the years or never designed for central air. We can fabricate pieces to reroute, resize or extend your existing ducts, replace damaged sections and add returns where they're missing, working around the home's original framing and finishes.

### Do you fabricate ductwork for commercial buildings?

Yes. We fabricate ductwork, plenums, transitions and rooftop curb adapters for offices, plazas, restaurants, tenant fit-outs and other [commercial projects](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/commercial/). The same team that builds each piece also installs it, so it fits the job. For a larger project, [tell us about your project](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/quote/?inquiry=commercial-project) and we'll put the right team on it.

### Why would a new furnace or air conditioner need custom sheet metal?

New equipment rarely has the same dimensions or connections as the old unit. A custom plenum or transition connects it cleanly to your existing ducts without restricting airflow, which helps the system run quietly and efficiently. We fabricate these fittings in our own shop as part of a [furnace replacement](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/heating/furnace-replacement/) or air conditioner installation.

### Is custom ductwork quieter?

Often, yes. Much of the noise from a heating and cooling system comes from air forced through ducts that are too small or have sharp, abrupt turns. Ductwork sized for your system's airflow, with smooth transitions, moves the same air at a lower speed, which reduces whistling and rushing sounds at the registers.

### Do you install the ductwork too, or only fabricate it?

We do both. Our fabricators and installers measure your space, design the system, build it in our shop and install it, so one team is responsible from start to finish. We can also integrate new ductwork with your existing system, make repairs and arrange [duct cleaning](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/air-quality/duct-cleaning/).
