# Trane vs Carrier Furnaces: An Installer's Honest Comparison

> Trane and Carrier both make high-efficiency condensing gas furnaces in three tiers, with single-stage, two-stage and modulating models. Carrier's top model has the higher AFUE (up to 98.5% vs up to 97.3%), while Trane's two-stage models use stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers and a compact 34-inch cabinet. Both give a lifetime limited heat exchanger and 10-year parts warranty with registration, so sizing and installation quality matter more than the badge.

**Short answer:** Trane and Carrier both build excellent high-efficiency gas furnaces, and both offer single-stage,
two-stage and modulating models in three tiers. Carrier's top model reaches a higher AFUE (up to 98.5% vs Trane's
up to 97.3%). Trane's two-stage models use stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers in a compact
34-inch cabinet. The warranties are similar. For most homes, the right size and a careful installation matter far
more than which badge is on the cabinet.

Lancaster is an authorized dealer for both brands and installs them across Hamilton, Halton and Niagara. Here's how they
actually compare, using the manufacturers' own specifications.

## The two companies

Trane is a brand of [Trane Technologies](https://investors.tranetechnologies.com/news-and-events/news-releases/news-release-details/2024/Trane-by-Trane-Technologies-Named-Americas-Most-Trusted-HVAC-Brand-for-the-10th-Consecutive-Year/default.aspx),
and Carrier is part of [Carrier Global Corporation](https://www.carrier.com/residential/en/ca/news/news-article/carrier-listed-among-the-best-hvac-companies-of-2023-by-forbes-home.html).
Lancaster is a [Trane Comfort Specialist](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/trane/) and an authorized [Carrier](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/carrier/) dealer, listed on both
manufacturers' dealer locators, and we install the full furnace range from each.

AFUE ratings are "up to" figures and vary by size. Browse every model on our [Trane furnaces](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/trane/furnaces/)
and [Carrier furnaces](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/carrier/furnaces/) pages.

## Efficiency and staging

Every model here is a condensing furnace in the mid-to-high 90s for AFUE, so the efficiency gap between the two
brands is small, about one percentage point at most in each tier. The bigger decision is **staging**:

- **Single-stage** (Trane Choice 96, Carrier Comfort 96): full output or off. Simple and lowest in cost.
- **Two-stage** (Trane Premier 97 and Priority 96, Carrier Infinity 97, Infinity 96 and Performance 96): runs on
low most of the time. Carrier says its two-stage models run on low up to 90% of the time; Trane says the Premier
97 runs on low "as often as possible."
- **Modulating** (Trane Premier 96M, Carrier Infinity 98): adjusts output in small steps for the most even
  temperatures. Carrier's Infinity 98 modulates between 40% and 100% in 1% increments.

Carrier's lineup has more two-stage choices at the top; Trane's premium tier gives you a clear choice between a
modulating and a two-stage model.

## Blowers and humidity control

The blower moves air through your home, so it shapes comfort and noise as much as the burner does.

- **Trane** uses a variable-speed blower on both Premier models and a constant-torque ECM motor with its Vortica II
blower on the Priority 96 and Choice 96. The Premier models add Comfort-R humidity control, and the Premier 97
also has a variable-speed draft inducer.
- **Carrier** uses variable-speed blowers through the Infinity and Performance lines, and an 18-speed ECM blower on
the Comfort 96. Infinity models offer Ideal Humidity System technology, and the Performance 96 has SmartEvap,
which Carrier says can reduce humidity by up to 10%.

## Communicating controls and smart thermostats

This is where the brands differ most in day-to-day use.

- **Trane:** the Premier 96M has ComfortLink II communicating capability. The Priority 96 uses a 24V control board
that works with most thermostats. Trane's [Link UX360 smart thermostat](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/trane/link-ux360-smart-thermostat/)
supports dealer remote monitoring and diagnostics through the Trane Home app.
- **Carrier:** Infinity furnaces are built around the [Infinity System Control](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/carrier/infinity-system-control/),
which manages humidity, airflow, ventilation and up to eight zones. The Performance 96 offers InteliSense, which
lets your contractor view system health remotely when paired with the
[ecobee for Carrier Smart Thermostat](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/products/carrier/ecobee-for-carrier-smart-thermostat-premium/). The Comfort 96
supports Wi-Fi remote access with the Carrier Smart Thermostat.

If you want zoning or whole-home humidity management from a single screen, Carrier's Infinity control is built for exactly that.
If you want a simpler system that works with a wide range of thermostats, Trane's Priority and Choice models are easy
to live with.

## Heat exchangers and cabinet size

Trane lists stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers on the Premier 97 and Priority 96, and a tubular
stainless steel primary on the Choice 96. The Premier 97 and Priority 96 also come in a 34-inch-tall cabinet, which
helps in tight utility rooms and under low ductwork. Carrier offers all of its furnaces for natural gas, convertible
to propane with an optional kit.

## Warranty

| Feature | Trane | Carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exchanger | Lifetime limited | Lifetime limited with timely registration (20 years if not registered within 90 days) |
| Parts | 10-year limited with registration (residential) | 10-year limited with timely registration (5 years if not registered within 90 days) |
| Option | | Infinity 97: choice of 10-year parts or 5-year parts plus 3-year labour (dealer participation required) |

On paper the two are very close. In practice, registration and regular maintenance keep a warranty valid, and a
[service plan](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/service-plans/) makes the yearly [furnace service](https://lancasterheatingandcooling.ca/heating/furnace-service/) easy to remember.

## Why the installation matters more than the badge

A furnace is only as good as its installation. The same model can be quiet and efficient in one home and noisy and
short-cycling in another. What makes the difference:

- **Sizing:** a proper heat-loss calculation, not matching the old furnace.
- **Ductwork:** enough return air and properly sized supply runs, so a variable-speed blower isn't straining.
- **Venting and condensate:** correct PVC venting and a reliable drain.
- **Setup:** gas pressure, temperature rise and airflow set to the manufacturer's specifications.

## Which should you choose?

- **Choose Trane** if you want a compact cabinet, stainless steel heat exchangers in the two-stage models, or
a modulating Premier 96M without committing to a fully communicating system across the house.
- **Choose Carrier** if you want the highest AFUE in either lineup (Infinity 98), whole-home zoning and humidity
control through the Infinity System Control, or remote diagnostics with InteliSense.
- **On a tighter budget,** the Trane Choice 96 and Carrier Comfort 96 are both reliable single-stage furnaces.

## Trane vs Carrier furnace questions

### Is Trane or Carrier more efficient?

At the top of each lineup, Carrier's Infinity 98 is rated up to 98.5% AFUE and Trane's Premier 96M up to 97.3%. In the standard tier, the Carrier Comfort 96 is rated up to 97% and the Trane Choice 96 up to 96%. The gap is about one percentage point, so a correctly sized, well-installed furnace from either brand will cost about the same to run.

### Which Trane and Carrier furnaces are communicating?

The Trane Premier 96M has ComfortLink II communicating capability. Carrier's Infinity 96 and Infinity 97 use a communicating variable-speed ECM blower, and the Infinity 98 works with the Infinity System Control. Communicating equipment shares data between the furnace, thermostat and outdoor unit, so it works best when the whole system comes from the same family.

### Do Trane and Carrier furnace warranties require registration?

Yes. Trane's 10-year limited parts warranty applies with registration. Carrier's 10-year parts and lifetime heat exchanger limited warranties need registration within 90 days; otherwise they drop to 5 years on parts and 20 years on the heat exchanger. Ask us to confirm the registration is done on install day, and keep the paperwork with your furnace records.

### Do I need a special thermostat for a Trane or Carrier furnace?

Not for most models. The Trane Priority 96 works with most standard thermostats, for example. To use every feature of a communicating system, though, you need the matching control, such as the Carrier Infinity System Control for Infinity equipment, or the ecobee for Carrier Smart Thermostat for InteliSense remote diagnostics on Performance models.

### Can I put a Trane furnace with a Carrier air conditioner?

A standard furnace will usually work with another brand's air conditioner, but we don't recommend mixing brands. Matching the furnace, indoor coil and outdoor unit makes sure the system performs as rated, and communicating features only work within one brand's own equipment. If your air conditioner is still in good shape, we'll check what it pairs with before you choose.

### Which is quieter, a Trane or a Carrier furnace?

Quietness depends more on the type of furnace than on the brand. Two-stage and modulating models run on low most of the time, and variable-speed blowers ramp up gently. Both brands offer insulated cabinets on their top models. Undersized or restrictive ductwork makes any furnace noisy, so we check your ducts during the in-home assessment.
