Key rules
- You must own the home, and it must have been lived in for at least six months (no new builds).
- Detached, semi-detached, row and townhomes and similar low-rise homes qualify.
- The home must not already have a heat pump for space heating.
- The heat pump must be on Natural Resources Canada’s eligible product list and meet the program’s minimum efficiency.
- A participating contractor submits a pre-installation application, and work can’t start until written pre-approval. The contractor submits the post-installation paperwork within 30 days.
National Heat Pump Rebate (federal, new)
Announced on October 8, 2026, the National Heat Pump Rebate offers:
- Up to $10,000 for households below the median income.
- $2,000 for other eligible households.
Installations from November 1, 2026 count, and the online application portal is expected to open early in 2027. No energy audit is required, and the government says it can be combined with provincial programs. Income thresholds and full eligibility rules are being published by the federal government, so we’ll confirm the details for your home.
Smart thermostats
The Home Renovation Savings Program offers a rebate on qualifying smart thermostats that control your main heating or cooling. The offer ends December 31, 2026, and you must apply within 60 days of purchase. Check the current amount on the program site.
Separately, Save on Energy’s Peak Perks pays $75 to enrol and $20 a year if you let your smart thermostat adjust your central AC or heat pump slightly during summer peak demand.
Heat pump water heaters
A heat pump water heater qualifies for a $500 rebate through the Home Renovation Savings assessment stream, which requires a home energy assessment and at least two upgrades. That stream is closing: the follow-up assessment must be scheduled by November 30, 2026 and completed by December 31, 2026.
